Adventure and Survival modes are similar, but Adventure mode is designed for gamers to play on downloadable game maps created by other players. These modes have you battling hostile creatures, building structures, and continually managing your health stats. While you're exploring, you might encounter characters called hostile mobs, which could be spiders, zombies, and endermen (black creatures with glowing eyes). Creative mode is the best option for novices and younger players: It gives you full access to all the resources in the game so you can build endlessly without worrying about dying or fending off mobs (you'll see them, but they leave you alone).

If you're playing a multiplayer game, you can text-chat with people you don't know. But you can hide the chat window if you don't want to see messages or interact. To minimize contact with strangers, you can join a server organized by someone you know or set up your own. Players can also play "local" games with people in their homes. Kids can also download a chatting app such as Discord and voice- or video-chat while playing Minecraft.

A Minecraft mod is something that can be downloaded from the internet to change elements of the game. Mods can include custom skins for your avatar (in-game character), extra resources, and even themes (such as the popular dark theme, which makes it look like you're playing by moonlight). There are millions of mods, but you have to be careful of the sites offering downloads because they can contain malware and viruses. Always make sure your antivirus software is up to date, and only download mods from forums that are well-established (for example, ones where known players and moderators hang out). Microsoft offers mods and mod creators, as does CNET's

Have you opened the Minecraft Launcher and encountered an error message saying, "Failed to download file, the file contents differ from what was expected"? If so, the launcher has failed to update successfully. When this happens, you cannot access the game to explore the dungeons you had planned to explore or mine for hours in your virtual world.

Consider feeding the Minecraft launcher what it's asking for before you implement any other fixes. As the error window indicates, the file content on the disk is different from what the launcher expected, so downloading and manually adding the requested file may resolve the issue.

Upon replacing the file, restart the launcher to verify that the error has been resolved. If not, unzip the downloaded file in the same folder you pasted it in earlier. If the error persists, let the copied file be placed in the directory and implement the below fixes.

Microsoft Defender's Firewall could also be causing this error as it can prevent the launcher from downloading the files correctly. Therefore, whitelisting Minecraft in the Firewall settings (allowing the app through the Firewall) holds a good chance of resolving the issue.

Windows 11 users need to follow a different process to whitelist the app. If you haven't created an exclusion before, refer to our guide on whitelisting files on Windows 11 to exclude the Minecraft launcher. Try running the launcher again after whitelisting the launcher to see if it downloads the file this time. If the error persists, reinstall Minecraft.

Then, go to C: > Users > %username% > AppData > Roaming and delete the ".minecraft" folder. Afterward, grab a copy of Minecraft from the official website and install it on your computer.

By applying the above fixes, you should be able to fix the "Failed to download file, the contents differ from what was expected" error in Minecraft. If the problem persists, consider going back to an older version of the game.

Data packs can be placed in the .minecraft/saves/(world)/datapacks folder of a world. Each data pack is either a sub-folder or a .zip file within the datapacks folder. After it is in the folder, a data pack will be enabled for that world.

The Xbox 360 Edition supported downloadable content, which was available to purchase via the Xbox Games Store; these content packs usually contained additional character skins.[84] It later received support for texture packs in its twelfth title update while introducing "mash-up packs", which combined texture packs with skin packs and changes to the game's sounds, music and user interface.[85] The first mash-up pack (and by extension, the first texture pack) for the Xbox 360 Edition was released on 4 September 2013, and was themed after the Mass Effect franchise.[86] Unlike Java Edition, however, the Xbox 360 Edition did not support player-made mods or custom maps.[87] A cross-promotional resource pack based on the Super Mario franchise by Nintendo was released for the Wii U Edition worldwide on 17 May 2016.[88] A mash-up pack based on Fallout was announced for release on the Wii U Edition.[89] In April 2018, malware was discovered in several downloadable user-made Minecraft skins for use with the Java Edition of the game.[90][91] Avast stated that nearly 50,000 accounts were infected, and when activated, the malware would attempt to reformat the user's hard drive.[91][90] Mojang promptly patched the issue, and released a statement stating that "the code would not be run or read by the game itself",[90] and would only run when the image containing the skin itself was opened.[92]

On 17 December 2015, Minecraft: Wii U Edition was released. The Wii U version received a physical release on 17 June 2016 in North America,[158] in Japan on 23 June 2016,[159] and in Europe on 30 June 2016.[160] A Nintendo Switch version of the game was released on the Nintendo eShop on 11 May 2017, along with a physical retail version set for a later date.[161] During a Nintendo Direct presentation on 13 September 2017, Nintendo announced that Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition would be available for download immediately after the livestream, and a physical copy available on a later date. The game is only compatible with the New 3DS and New 3DS XL or New 2DS XL systems and does not work with the original 3DS and 3DS XL or 2DS systems.[13]

A version of Minecraft for the Raspberry Pi was officially revealed at Minecon 2012. The Pi Edition is based on an alpha version of Pocket Edition with the added ability of using text commands to edit the game world. Players can open the game code and use the Python programming language to manipulate things in the game world.[186] It also includes a scripting API to modify the game, and server software for multiplayer. The game was leaked on 20 December 2012, but was quickly pulled off.[187] It was officially released on 11 February 2013.[188] Mojang stopped providing updates to Minecraft: Raspberry Pi Edition in 2016. It is preinstalled on Raspberry Pi OS and can be downloaded for free from the official Minecraft website.[189]

Minecraft has been referenced by other video games, such as Torchlight II, Team Fortress 2,[342][343] Borderlands 2, Choplifter HD, Super Meat Boy, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, The Binding of Isaac, The Stanley Parable, FTL: Faster Than Light,[344][345] and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, the lattermost of which features a downloadable character and stage based on Minecraft.[346] It was also referenced by electronic music artist deadmau5 in his performances.[347] The game is also referenced heavily in "Informative Murder Porn", the second episode of the seventeenth season of the animated television series South Park.[348]
